Colour From the Silk Road

The Mogao Caves at Dunhuang were painted with rich mineral pigments — malachite green, azurite blue, ochre, and vermilion — layered over gold. Dunhuang-style clothing echoes that palette: warm, saturated, and glowing, a world away from muted everyday tones.

The Flying Apsaras (Feitian)

The caves' most famous figures are the feitian (飞天), or flying apsaras — celestial beings shown trailing long ribbons and scarves as they drift through the air. That sense of floating movement is the soul of Dunhuang style, captured through long pibo scarves and layered, drifting fabric.

A Tang-Rooted Aesthetic

Much of the Dunhuang look draws on Tang dress and its Silk-Road cosmopolitanism — high-waisted skirts, draped scarves, and confident colour — reinterpreted with the caves' mural motifs of lotuses, clouds, and celestial dancers.
