Song Dynasty Hanfu: Understated Elegance and the Beizi

After the flamboyance of the Tang, the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE) turned Chinese fashion in a quieter, more introspective direction. Restraint After Abundance

The Song was an age of philosophers, poets, and painters, shaped by a revival of Confucian thought. Fashion followed the mood: where Tang dress was bold and full, Song clothing became slender, layered, and subtle — refinement over spectacle. Muted palettes of white, pale green, soft blue, and brown replaced the Tang's vivid reds and golds.

The Beizi: The Song Signature

The defining Song garment is the beizi (背子), a long, straight, open-fronted jacket with slim sleeves that hangs loosely to the knee or below. Worn open over an inner top and skirt, it created a vertical, elongated line that suited the era's love of understated grace. The beizi was worn by women across classes and remains one of the most wearable, everyday-friendly Hanfu pieces today.

Layers Underneath

Beneath the beizi, women wore a moxiong (抹胸), a wrapped bandeau-style top, together with a long skirt, and sometimes a short ru blouse. The overall effect was modest and slim rather than voluminous. Song women also wore trousers under skirts more commonly than in earlier eras — practical and understated.

Colour and Fabric

Song taste favoured soft, natural dyes and fine but unshowy silks and gauze. Decoration was delicate — subtle florals and thin borders rather than large, bold motifs. The beauty was in proportion and drape, not ornament.

Because the beizi layers so naturally over simple tops and skirts, Song style is one of the easiest ways to bring Hanfu into everyday wear — to work, a café, or a relaxed outing.
